For the second week in succession Rangers rattled in four goals but this victory was harder earned than last Saturday.

It looked as though the Ibrox side were cruising after Shota Arveladze and Dado Prso put them two ahead within three minutes. However Hibs had other ideas and Gary Caldwell reduced the leeway before half-time.

Indeed the Edinburgh side should have equalised early in the second half before Jean-Alain Boumsong settled Rangers' nerves and Peter Lovenkrands supplied the icing with a late goal.

After Arveladze's snap-shot was easily gathered by Simon Brown in the Hibs goal Rangers took an early lead. Prso timed his run perfectly to beat Hibs' offside trap and controlled Gregory Vignal's free-kick before sending in a delicate cross which Arveladze headed home from close range.

Brown's hurried clearance was then played quickly by Alex Rae to Nacho Novo but the winger's attempt to chip the Hibs keeper drifted wide.

The home side increased their lead after another studied build up. Boumsong's intelligent pass to Arveladze was transferred to Fernando Ricksen and from his deep cross Prso's header floated into the left-hand corner of the net.

After Vignal pulled his shot wide from a good position, Hibs nearly fell further behind but Brown made a fine fingertip save to keep out Prso's header.

Hibs at last came into the match and Stefan Klos saved well from Dean Shiels after Ricksen was caught badly out of position.

The visitors came close to pulling one back when two attempts from a corner were blocked by Klos before Derek Riordan's drive was cleared off the line by Rae.

Rangers did not learn from this escape and from Shiels' corner Caldwell bundled the ball home to reduce the deficit.

Rangers' two-goal advantage was nearly restored but after fine work by Prso his parting shot beat Brown only for Caldwell to scramble clear from the line.

An incident-packed first half drew to a close with Arveladze glancing Novo's cross wide from in front of goal.

Hibs pushed forward from the restart and after Garry O'Connor's pass found Guillaume Beuzelin, it looked as though the Frenchman would score but Klos magnificently blocked his effort with his foot.

If Hibs had equalised then, the result may have turned out differently but as it was Boumsong put the home side further ahead with a powerful header from Vignal's corner which went in off the underside of the bar.

This goal allowed Rangers boss Alex McLeish to send on Dragan Mladenovic for the last half-hour prior to their Champions League match.

Klos had to stay alert to touch over Riordan's free-kick but Rangers scored their fourth goal when Lovenkrands latched on to Novo's throughball before driving his shot high into the roof of the net.
