Rangers' miserable season at home ended with a whimper as Hearts recorded their first league win at Ibrox in over eight years.

It was no more than the Edinburgh side deserved with their winner being scored by Joe Hamill who seized on a mistake by Alan Hutton just after half-time.

It was a sad final home appearance for three of Rangers' Dutch players, Michael Mols, and the de Boer twins, but the Gers are certainly in need of some radial surgery over the summer.

The home side wasted an early chance when a flowing move started by Fernando Ricksen ended with Steven Hughes' cutback being left by Mols and Steven Thompson to each other.

Mikel Arteta's pass to Chris Burke then beat the offside trap but the winger volleyed wide.

Hutton then slipped on the edge of the Rangers penalty area, but Hamill pulled his shot wide. Gers keeper Allan McGregor then had to be sharp to save at the feet of Graham Weir.

Paolo Vanoli tried to liven things up in a match that lacked atmosphere but his pass from Mols was delayed too long and the striker was offside.

After Patrick Kisnorbo fouled Burke, Arteta's free-kick flashed across the face of goal but no Rangers player was able to get the vital touch.

Hearts nearly went ahead when Scott Severin's header from a Steven Boyack corner looked net-bound, but Hutton managed to clear off the line.

Arteta nearly surprised Craig Gordon in the Hearts goal with a quickly-taken free-kick which nearly crept in at the near post before the Jambos keeper recovered well.

Mols' curling shot from the edge of the box then drifted just past the post as the first half petered out.

Hearts took the lead early in the second half when Hutton, who had moved to the centre of defence to replace Frank de Boer, sent a back-pass short, leaving Hamill with a simple chance to slide the ball home past McGregor.

Alex McLeish's side tried to hit back and from Arteta's corner, Thompson headed over as Rangers desperately tried to salvage some pride from the game.

Hutton then released Maurice Ross with a superb pass, but the wing-back tried to find Mols rather than shoot and the chance was lost.

Weir's 18-yard drive was well-saved by McGregor before referee Dougie McDonald waved away Vanoli's penalty appeal after he appeared to have been pushed when going for Arteta's free-kick.

Ronald de Boer came on for the last ten minutes and, from his clever flick, Thompson was presented with a gilt-edge chance, but lost control at the vital moment.
