Welcome return for Mr. Smith.

He's the new director of football at the club and his wealth of experience in the game should be good news for new manager, Ally McCoist, and for Rangers fans too.

I remember Hugh Taylor likening his playing style to the smoothness of a Rolls Royce such was his classiness on the field of play, and praise doesn't get much higher than that.

He played for Rangers twice, the second time only briefly, and he knows how it feels to score the winning goal against Celtic in a cup final.

Since the end of his playing career, Smith has been involved in the game as an agent, as a media pundit and as chief executive of the SFA.

During his time as an agent he represented Kenny Miller. I can't help wondering if their professional paths will cross again.

Smith, who has a business degree, has always spoken his mind in determined fashion, and he's been around Scottish football long enough to know how the land lies - and which way the wind is blowing.

He's a football man who hasn't forgotten the people who fund the sport, and he's been more than happy in the past to speak at the Rangers Supporters Trust Annual Dinner.

He is also a Rangers supporter, and although this isn't qualification in itself to get the job, in addition to his vast experience in the game, it's the cherry on top of the cake.

It won't be a stroll in the park in his new position; no high profile job at Rangers ever is, but Gordon Smith will not let anyone down in his efforts to keep Rangers in its regular place in Scottish football; as history ably demonstrates: at the very top.

I wish him well.

Welcome back, Gordon.
