WE'VE RECOVERED FROM THE FLOODS

Generally, the city IS dry, but there are still areas which are restricted, but most of them are not interesting for tourist. Exceptions are some damaged areas of Old Town, Lesser Town and Kampa - the historic centre built right by the river banks (which are more from 5 to 7 meters high ). Unfortunately, the river went up by more than 7 meters.

Main tourist areas in Prague are:

- The Prague Castle

- palaces on Lesser Town

- Kampa with John Lennon Wall ( now closed for public)

- The Charles Bridge

- Celetna Street

- The Old Town Square with Astrological Clock (with spectacular show each hour)

(you can visit all these items on one trip, because they are very close to each other

others: National Theatre, Old Jewish Town (Josefov), Vysehrad Castle and many others, like Petrin Tower (very similar to Eiffel Tower, but much smaller)

On Strahov there are more stadiums. The one where the game will be played is suitable for athletics as well. It has been slightly reconstructed recently according to UEFA standards. Next to this stadium is Spartakiadni Stadium - World's biggest stadium. It's Area is as big as 11 Football ground and its capacity is 250.000. Nowadays, Sparta Praha build a youth training centre on this stadium, where should be 6-8 grounds.

There are also shopping areas - Na Prikope Street with many shopping passages and Wenceslas Square

Where to avoid? Avoid park near Hlavni Nadrazi (Main Station) - if you don't have to, DO NOT go there.

Be very careful in trams especially between station Namesti Miru and Karlovo Namesti (Charles Square) - tram nr: 4,6,10,16,22,23; then between Karlovo namesti and Narodni Divadlo (National Theatre) (nr: 9,18,22,23)" Jindrisska - Narodni Trida (9) and Malostranska - Prazsky Hrad (Prague Castle) (22,23).

There are LOTS of pickpockets in these trams. Watch your pockets, handbags, cameras and backpacks (and wallets, of course). Usually these crimes are committed by women and kids. Watch out groups of pickpockets  when getting into tram or tube. They make skirmish and steal.

The worst you can meet in Prague is a taxi driver. It is "normal" when he ask for two thousand CZK ( 40 pounds) for 3 miles. Normal prices are approximately 30 CZK for getting into the car and 22 CZK per Km. The rate for waiting is 4 CZK per minute. The car MUST be equipped with firmly attached yellow roof sign with black title TAXI. There should be a horizontal stripped line on the side of the car as well. The driver's name and prices must be written on the door of the car.Otherwise do not get in the car. Ask for the price before you get in. Require proper filled record of the fare payment. This record must be given to the client from the printer of the taximeter. Very reliable is AAA taxi, they will pick you up free of charge and are reliable. Call telephone Nr. 140 14. On the airport only Airport taxi are allowed. Take taxivan from there to the centre.

Czech fans are not very enthusiastic. The average attendance in 1.liga is around 5.000. Old stadium have been modernised very recently, but there are still stadiums where UEFA games cannot be held. The biggest attendance in Czech league was 44.000 in Brno against Slavia Praha in 1996. Earlier, when there were larger stadiums, the biggest attendance was some 100,000 on Strahov on the match between Slavia and Sparta Praha.

These two teams are the greatest rivals, something like Rangers and Celtic, but here there aren't problems with religion since 60% of Czech are atheists, 30% Catholics and 10% others. The activity of churches was very low during communism because of the repression from Communist Party.

Sparta is more successful, richer and has more fans (skin head hardcore fans are feared). Zizkov is very patriotic club, since this Prague quarter lives its own life and most people visiting games on Zizkov are right from there. The average attendance on Zizkov is between 2,500 and 3,000.

The Club had big problems last several years, they finished in the lower half of the table, but two years ago we finished fifth and qualified into Europe after seven years. We were swept by Innsbruck. Last years we were second or third during all the season, five times we were first and we were only five minutes from the League Title.

We played against Slavia on Strahov (Slavia¹s ground). If we hadn't had lost, we would have played Champions League qualification no matter other results. If we managed to hold the tie 0:0, we would be the champions, because the leader, Liberec lost to Bohemians. But Pavel Kuka from Slavia scored game winner just 5 minutes to go...

I hope you'll find the information useful.
