The possible disintegration of Setanta and the SPL deal.

Last updated : 02 June 2009 By Knight of the Swan
Today's press carries much in the way of rumour, suggestion and gossip about the financial state of the Irish-based organisation.

But what we can gather is that the company is struggling to pay its contracted dues to the SPL, and there may have to be a restructuring of its business to allow it to continue to function and to deliver on its obligations.

Setanta agreed a deal with the SPL to pay £125m in exchange for rights up until 2010. The final payment of this season, somewhere in the region of £3m, is the source of today's North of the Border conjecture.

The consequences of Setanta defaulting are significant but in the wider scheme of things many in the Rangers support would not shed a tear for the demise of the biased broadcaster. The technical quality of coverage alone would provoke disappointment, but the fundamental bias in favour of all things Celtic - to the point that we are asked by the host to pause in silence and enjoy the Republican Irish theme park songs as half-time entertainment - and general hostility towards Rangers, evident in commentary and emphasised by production prioritites and decisions, is enough to convince many that the cost of any deal with the broadcaster is too high.

FF does not wish to state an official position on the matter, but should you wish to cancel Setanta, email them at the following address:
