SFA Youth Cup 3rd Round - Rangers 12-0 Fraserburgh

Sunday 11th November 2007 - Auchenhowie - Rangers Under 19's commenced the defence of the Youth Cup with a comprehensive demolition of Highland League Fraserburgh at Auchnhowie in front of 121 spectators, many of whom had made the long journey from the North of Scotland in the early hours of the morning.

After the players, officials and supporters had observed a two minutes silence for Armistice Day, the signs were ominous for the visitors as early as the 3rd minute when some clever build up play from Giorgis Efrem and Isa Bagci put in Chris Craig whose effort was well saved by Jonathan Dunbar and turner round for a corner.

The onslaught then began a minute later as Danny Wilson beat the offside to race through one on one with Dunbar and this time the keeper had no chance.

Three minutes later Efrem was brought crashing in the box as he tried to dribble his way through and it was John Fleck who dispatched the spot kick with aplomb.

A minute later and Efrem wasn't to be denied this time, picking up the ball in midfield he ghosted past the stationary opposition players right through into the box where he cleverly chipped the ball into the top far corner to put the match beyond the Highland side after only 8 minutes.

It was all one sided as Fraserburgh just didn't have any answer outfield, however brave goalkeeper Dunbar stemmed the tide with a brilliant double save from, firstly, John Fleck then again when Thomas Kindbendiksen hammered in the rebound.

That was only to delay the inevitable as in the 13th minute following another save from Dunbar, Danny Wilson collected the spill and turned the ball into the net to put the Holders 4-0 in front.

It took The Broch 18 minutes to get their first, and only, shot on target following a free kick which Andrew Whyte hit from 25 yards out but was easily saved by Scott Gallacher.

The Highland league side were now starting to settle down a bit, but Dunbar was called on again in the 27th minute to deny Fleck when he burst through the middle and deny the little dynamo his second goal.

The Light Blues were in no mood to go easy on their opponents and some good build up play from Bagci and Craig saw Fleck hit the post.

Seconds later Fleck then returned the favour to Chris Craig when he set him up with a clear opportunity but somehow the midfielder managed to miss the target completely after side stepping his marker.

Craig then made amends a minute later when he received a long through ball which he controlled impeccably before closing in on goal and scoring the fifth of the match on 37 minutes.

Isa Bagci had the chance right on half time to make it six but the luckless striker hit his shot straight at Dunbar following a great pass from Mitchetslaeger.

Half Time - Rangers 5 Fraserburgh 0

It took 8 minutes of the second half before one of the most amazing goal bursts Murray Park has ever seen took place.

In the space of only 17 minutes the young Light Blues hammered in an amazing SEVEN goals.

First up was John Fleck who picked up the ball before bursting through the Broch defence and picking his spot past the helpless Dunbar.

A minute later the ball broke to Michael Donald who then slipped inside the defender before unleashing a curling shot to the far post to make it 7-0.

On the 57th minute Isa Bagci raced through and looked a cert to score but for the attentions of Bryan Hay, the big centre half stretched out to win ball but only succeeded in bringing the big Swede crashing to the ground. Referee Alistair Kerr had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, nor in showing the defender the red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

John Fleck then stepped up to despatch the ball into the back of the net for his third and Rangers' eighth.

Michael Donald was then to compete his hat-trick with a two goal burst on 59 and 61 minutes when firstly he struck home after the ball had came off Dunbar and then again after Fleck had his shot well saved, he picked up the rebound to slot home the Tenth goal of the match.

Substitute Jeroen Van Den Broeck, who had replaced Ross Harvey 5 minutes earlier, then added to the scoring when played through and again Dunbar was left helpless as his defence stood square and the Belgian finished with ease.

The final goal of the afternoon came in the 70th minute when Chris Craig again beat the offside trap and ran through the square defensive line to collect a long ball from the left and unhindered slotted his shot past Dunbar to make it Rangers 12 Fraserburgh 0.

With 20 minutes still on the clock the home support were expecting a few more goals before the final whistle but credit to the very young Broch side who never gave up trying to make a match of it and played out the final segment without conceding any more goals.

Soon after conceding the twelfth, 'keeper Dunbar made a stunning double save from Isa Bagci and then denied the Swede with a couple of stops from point blank range as the striker tried desperately to get his name onto the score sheet.

The rampant home side were still searching for more goals but the visitors had by now figured out how to work the offside trap and this also prevented an increase in the scoreline.

The only booking in the match went to Chris Cameron with 5 minutes remaining when he found himself in the referee's notebook following a challenge which was more clumsy than malicious.

The final whistle came as a relief to the besieged Fraserburgh lads who now faced a long trek back home and for Rangers signalled their passage into Round 4 and another step towards retaining the Cup won so emphatically at Hampden Park last season.
