Scotland 1 France 0 – was it a dream?!

Or would certain cretins in the country make France the world Cup vice-champions?  No matter.

The first half was largely a story of 70%+ possession for the French and two goals ruled out for offside from Viera (which was mightily close) and an overhead kick attempt from Trezeguet (which was well offside).

The second half though, was were the real action was.  Walter Smith, having had his side on the defensive in the first half, sent out his side with the view to gain possession and get forward.  And they did.

Whilst France looked the more likely, Scotland started to force a few chances.  Following James McFadden's swiped attempted following a Boumsong slip, Scotland forced a corner.  In it came, and Gary Caldwell of all people stuck out a leg.

Incredibly with 70 minutes on the clock it was one-nil and the VDH household erupted.

The next 20 minutes had Scotland largely pegged back and defending for their lives – and they did.  The key chance for France came on 86 minutes as Thierry Henry ghosted in behind the defence, only to head weakly at Craig Gordon from six yards.

Three minutes of time added on and it was brick your pants time.  However Scotland clung on – Craig Gordon saving brilliantly at the feet of Louis Saha – and that was that.  It was time to rub your eyes – Walter's Scotland had just beaten one of the best sides in the world.  And credit where credit is due – Walter Smith's Scotland is a tough nut to crack.

Stand outs for Scotland were Gary Caldwell(!) in defence, captain Barry Ferguson for his superb second half performance and perversely Graham Alexander who outshone his counterpart Willy Sagnol.

Preston North End overcoming Bayern Munich – which largely sums up the day!

A fantastic battling performance and a great start to the campaign with 9 points out of 9.  Next stop Kiev!

FF Man of the Match – Graham Alexander.

As a quick side-note, spare a thought for Aidenho McGeadyiho who chose Ireland over Scotland.  And think “well done Cyprus”…. makes it all the sweeter.
