Grand-daughter Dawn McKellar assisted Lord Mayor David Barbour in marking Sam's birth at 18 Crevolea Road, Aghadowey, County Londonderry, as a blue plaque set in a blackstone wall was unveiled by the roadside. Also unveiled was a plaque actually on the English family cottage - although the one on the cottage is not viewable from the public road.

Earlier in the day the family - grand-daughter Dawn McKellar, son-in-law Ronnie Cree and grandson-in-law Lloyd Gailey and a representative of the Sam English Commemoration Committee met the Lord Mayor in his parlour at the Coleraine Borough Council offices to sign the visitors book, take lunch and conduct interviews with the local media.

Local councillors, MLA Adrian McQuillan, former Lord Mayor Maurice Bradley, representatives from local sports organisations, the local historical society and fundraisers from Garvagh and Limavady Rangers supporters clubs also attended. The present house owner Dessie Monaghan then entertained the guests in his home with tea and cakes!

The local museum in Garvagh was also visited and the family were given a tour of the social club premises of the Third Tree Rangers Supporters Club in Garvagh.

Sam's 44 league goals in a single season remains a Rangers record.
