Rangers maintained their 100% League record this afternoon with a comfortable 4-1 win over Hamilton Accies at Ibrox - but this was a victory that could, and should, have been by a much wider margin.

Manager Walter Smith made two changes from Tynecastle with Pedro Mendes and Kris Boyd replacing John Fleck and the suspended Kevin Thomson.

There was a sparse travelling support from Lanarkshire - and the misgivings held by those present were soon justified as the Light Blues went all out for an early strike, Steve Davis through on six minutes from a Mendes lob seeing his effort blocked by Accies goalkeeper Tomas Cerny.

Two minutes later the Ulsterman played a one-two with Mendes only to see his weak shot held by Cerny.

The opening goal arrived in eighteen minutes when Steven Whittaker slotted home a slide-rule Davis pass.

Former Ranger Marvin Andrews - an Accies substitute - received warm applause when he warmed up behind the goal at the Broomloan Road end of the ground.

It was soon 2-0, Boyd heading home in 26 minutes from a Sasa Papac cross following good work from Kenny Miller.

It was one-way traffic - Kenny Miller coming close in forty minutes when he was through wide on the left from a Davis chip only to see his eighteen-yard shot flash over.

Madjid Bougherra twice came close either side of the interval - firstly when his header from a Mendes corner was just wide of the target, then when he sliced over Miller's cross from a Whittaker pass.

The visitors had scarcely crossed the halfway line - and Miller was next to test Cerny in 48 minutes when his flick from a Whittaker cross was blocked.

Hamilton finally provided a shot on target two minutes later when Derek Lyle's wide-angled twenty-yard free-kick was beaten out by Allan McGregor.

McGregor was called into action again just before the hour when he clawed away James McArthur's chip from the bye-line.

It was soon back to the other end however - and Boyd made it 3-0 in 64 minutes when he netted following a move down the left between Davis and Steven Naismith.

Two minutes later the goal of the game arrived when Whittaker curled the ball home from the edge of the box following a one-two with Davis.

Rangers were out for more - Mendes seeing his curler in 68 minutes from a Whittaker lay-off held by Cerny.

There was a welcome return for Nacho Novo four minutes later when he replaced Naismith - and a debut for youngster Gregg Wylde in eighty minutes when he substituted for Miller.

Rangers were coasting - but a rare error by David Weir led to slackness in the Ibrox defence allowing Mark McLaughlin to head home via the underside of the bar from a Luis Rubiales corner in 86 minutes.

Afterwards Walter Smith summed up:

"Obviously we are delighted to open with three wins out of three. We have had a decent start to the season but there is more to come. We have had moments in games where we have been a bit slack - that's something we will need to look at. We could have scored more goals."
