RANGERS 1 v 2 MOTHERWELL

Rangers - McDonald 88
Motherwell - Davy Clarkson 29, Andy Scott 77.

(Played at Auchenhowie, 1pm, Friday 18 October, 2002)

Rangers slipped up at Auchenhowie on Friday afternoon with an unusually
poor performance in which the Gers made few genuine chances and repeatedly
gifted possession to the visitors.

Just short of the half-hour Davy Clarkson dribbled into the box and despite
Rangers having three chances to clear the danger he retained control of the
ball and fired home.

Clarkson had a chance to double the lead just before half-time with a fierce
shot from 12 yards out which was well saved by Callum Redford who both
anticipated the shot and got his body behind it in a the dive.

HT - 0-1

The second half started where the first had finished with Well putting some
fine attacking moves together - a ball lobbed over the static defence was
taken inside by the winger and his shot was only deflected away by
substitute Steven Campbell¹s saving challenge.

In the 57th minute Rangers had their first clear-cut chance of the day when
Hutton worked his way down the wing and his cross found Tom Brighton whose
shot was knocked out for the corner by the defence.

The final 15 minutes were frantic - Motherwell¹s centre-forward was brought
down by Redford as he raced in from the left to challenge for the ball - but
play was waved on.

Shortly thereafter Gus McLeod was culpable for what turned out to be the
winning goal when he dithered on ball in the box when a hoof up the park
would have done - he was smart dispossessed by Andy Scott who then had the
simplest of tasks of firing into the empty net.

With two minutes to go John McDonald got a goal back for the young Light
Blues with a header from a Fraser Coyle cross.

A minute into extra time Rangers wasted a golden opportunity to salvage a
point when McDonald sent a perfectly placed Tom Brighton cutback pass high
above the crossbar.
