If he goes then Walter must go out with a bang.

Today’s newspapers and media bring with them confirmation of a whisper going around since last week about Walter Smith and his consideration of the position he holds on the board of Rangers. Whether he does leave or not remains to be seen but be in no doubt that here there is sufficient fire to warrant the smoke.

In practical terms, a replacement Chairman could be found but both in terms of symbolism and in reality this could be a devastating blow.

And if Walter is to go then let us be clear about a couple of things; firstly, this would not be the time for fan factions or arguing about whether A likes B or Y is any good at Z.

Simply put, Walter is presently the only member of the RFC board with any moral weight.

He is the only man on that board from whom a warts-and-all account and personal explanation of events would automatically lead the wider support to take notice and the only man with the stature, authority and respect to demand that people would not only listen but will take heed of his words.

Secondly, and more importantly, if he is to (finally) sever his relationship with The Rangers - perhaps disillusioned, certainly unable to stomach the shenanigans which continue and show no signs of abating - then he has to go out with all guns blazing.

It would be disappointing, no, it would be simply unacceptable were he to resign and keep private his full reasons for doing so, and thus deny the people who keep alive this Club – the fans – the opportunity to discover the full extent of his frustrations with some of the people presently acting against the interests and endangering the success and the future of this institution.

Lay it all on the line. Leave nothing of note unsaid. This is now too important for any other response, should Smith leave a position of authority and meaning at Ibrox for the final time.

It is to be hoped that he changes his mind (again) and that there can be a resolution to the present problems that can finally and irrevocably end the saga and place the Club on a secure footing as we continue on our return journey to the top of Scottish football. But we should not discount the possibility that this time he will finally decide that enough is enough and exit, stage left.

And if so, every fan of this Club has to make their voice heard.  Before it is too late.
