Depth of Squad: the biggest barrier to CL Progression?

Our last CL Group campaign in 2007/08 started so well but fell away when we couldn't quite make the most of our opportunity in Stuttgart, and Lyon took revenge for their earlier embarrassment.

We didn't qualify, but we occasionally flattered to deceive, and we ended up in the UEFA Cup - we all know how that ended.

One of a number of things worth mentioning is this:

All five of our back division played in each of the group games. McGregor, Papac, Weir, Cuellar and Hutton were joined as ever-presents by our Captain, Barry Ferguson.

Three others - Thomson, Hemdani and McCulloch - managed five appearances.

In all, we had 15 starters and only 17 players made it onto the pitch in our colours in that CL campaign.

The time before - 2005/6 when we qualified for the second round - we had the luxury (?) of being able to start 20 different players and use 22 all in.

I have little doubt that our first choice eleven can qualify from this group.

However, what are the consequences of an injury to Weir or Boogie; to Mendes or Davis; to Miller or Lafferty? The replacement level - over five or six games - simply isn't sufficient.

Will Thomson's persistent problem with discipline rob us of his services?

Can Kris Boyd be fitted into Walter's plans?

Much to ponder, amid the excitement, the guaranteed cash, and the thrills of being in the top competition.
