Morag Grey, chief executive of the course said: "This race is our annual tribute to one of the most gifted Scottish players of all time. He played for Rangers an amazing 540 times and was capped for Scotland on 22 occasions. We are privileged and proud to host this race in his memory."

A Family Day for racegoers of all ages AND people who have never been racing before is the theme for Hamilton Park's next race meeting on the afternoon of Sunday, May 2.

The "Discover Scottish Racing Family Day" boasts a card of SEVEN races and a host of fun activities - especially geared towards individuals who have never been to a racecourse or are new to racing.

Hamilton Park Chief Executive Morag Gray said: "The Discover Scottish Racing Family Day is designed to showcase everything that is good about racing in Scotland. This is your chance to learn what it's all about AND make it a family day out to remember."

Among the activities lined up are:

*The Discover Scottish Racing Marquee featuring a fascinating exhibition from the National Horseracing Museum at Newmarket. On show will be a life-size stable and horse simulator - used for training jockeys.

* The opportunity find out what it is like to race from a National Hunt jockey

*Get an introduction to betting or enjoy a tour of the racecourse from expert Hamilton Park staff

*Listen to the Band of the 52 Lowland Regiment who will play for the pleasure of racegoers

*Keep the kids happy with an inflatable assault course and free face painting

Morag added: "Discover Scottish Racing Family Day really will be a day out to remember. What could be better than to enjoy racing on an early summer Sunday at Hamilton Park."

The full seven-race card is as follows:

1.45 - The Ian Stevenson EBF Maiden Stakes
2.15 - The Sunday Mail Annual Jump Jockeys' Handicap Stakes
(to be ridden by National Hunt jockeys)
2.50 - The 52 Lowland Regiment Claiming Stakes
3.25 - The totejackpot Handicap Stakes
4.00 - The Jacqui Dalgleish 40th Birthday Stakes
4.35 - The David Cooper Memorial Handicap
5.10 - Discover Scottish Racing Handicap

The first race on the card is in memory of Ian Stevenson - a former Director of Hamilton Park whose contribution to the racecourse down the years has helped make it the superb racing venue it is today.

One race which attracts particular attention is the Jump Jockeys' Handicap which features National Hunt jockeys not usually seen racing on the flat.

Morag said: "This is something of a novelty when jump jockeys appear at a flat racecourse. It is enormously popular with Hamilton Park spectators who rarely see these jockeys racing on the flat."

Entrances to the racecourse open on Discover Scottish Racing Family Day at 11.45 am.

Meanwhile, the racecourse is off to a flying start in 2004 after crowd numbers soared on the first day of racing.

Sunny skies helped send attendance figures UP by almost a half.
The racecourse has disclosed that 2,708 people flocked to the racecourse on Monday, April 26 for the first meeting of the year - an increase of 48 per cent on the same day last year.
