70th Anniversary of the Rangers Supporters Association

Last updated : 15 September 2016 By Grandmaster Suck

The Rangers FC Supporters Association was formed in February 1946 in Fountainwell after an advert ran in the Daily Record calling for Rangers fans living in the Townhead and Springburn areas to come forward.

The Association grew quickly: office premises were acquired in Oxford Street in the Gorbals before moving later to a large top flat in Rutland Crescent nearer Ibrox.  In 1971 the Association headquarters were opened on Edmiston Drive in what is now called the Wee Rangers Club.

The RFCSA Annual of 1952 gives us a an insight into the workings of the Association.

The Annual reported generous donations to East Park Home; the Knockshinnoch Disaster Relief Fund (a collection taken at the Hearts match); a cordial meeting with the Celtic Supporters Association; the purchase of over 5,000 tickets for the Scotland game at Wembley (which resulted in a barney with the SFA as an increase in the tickets going to fat cats resulted in just 225 being allocated!); a meeting with the local MP lobbying over the cost of train travel to Wembley; and the Association’s attendance at the AGM of the National Playing Fields Association.

Over 70 years the Association has rendered great service to the Rangers support - mostly recently being one of the staunchest groups in the Union of Fans which created the conditions to see the club saved from the clutches of the asset-strippers. The Rangers Rally would become a fixture on the calendar for fans with thousands turning up each year before Martin Bain killed it off.

This year sees the 70th anniversary marked with the second revival of the Rally at Ibrox this Saturday night with a dinner featuring speakers, management and players. A few tickets are still available.

Happy birthday to the association!
