U21 International - Scotland 1 (Naismith 49) Turkey 1 (Gulec 58 Pen)

It was a game that was far from being a typical end-of-season friendly, with the Turks at their cynical worst – perhaps angered by a perceived snub when their National Anthem was not played before the kick-off.

Adam was the lone Ranger in the starting line-up, although Ross McCormack featured on the substitutes' bench.

The match was certainly competitive – within five minutes David Clarkson had tangled with visiting goalkeeper Serkan Kirintili following a Mark Wilson free-kick – the Motherwell forward ended up grounded but English Referee Mark Halsey contented himself with a stern lecture for both players.

Adam almost opened the scoring twenty minutes later when his header from a Charlie Mulgrew free-kick was just too high.

Despite the underlying tension, and the constant body-checking and cynicism of the Turks it was not until the 44th minutes that the referee finally produced a yellow card when Burak Yilmaz fouled Wilson.

Scotland opened the scoring four minutes after the restart when local hero Steven Naismith netted the rebound from close range after Kirintili had parried Clarkson's header from an Adam cross.

The Turks levelled the scoreline in 58 minutes from the penalty spot when Gokhan Gulec netted after Gary Irvine had upended Ibrahim Akin.

The game had never been too far from boiling point, and there was yet another flashpoint fourteen minutes later when Naismith tangled with no fewer than three Turks – namely Ufukhan Bayraktar, Ibrahim Dagasan and Gokhan Inler. The Kilmarnock youngster was lectured by a referee who had long ago lost the plot.

Inevitably Mark Halsey finally produced a red card in 88 minutes – but unbelievably, given all that had gone before, it was a Scot who was on the receiving end when Adam clashed in mid-air with Kirintili. There appeared nothing in the challenge, but the Turkish goalkeeper collapsed theatrically in a heap, and the Ranger was immediately surrounded by hysterical opponents.

The referee had lost all semblance of control, and incredibly, to the astonishment of almost everyone present, ordered Adam off, a decision that will cost the player his place in the European Championship qualifier against Slovenia.

Turkey almost stole it in injury time when Akin's twenty-yard drive was inches wide.
