Trying to remember the last league title - the 1980s and today.

SIMPLY THE WORST

There's every chance we're about to see Celtic win the title for the 4th successive year, and Rangers relying on what looks like a relatively easy couple of games in the Scottish Cup to prevent a barren season. Its been a long time since we failed to be crowned champions for four successive seasons, back in the dark days of the early 80s - a period in our history often looked on as the worst spell of them all.

As a supporter who followed the team back in the Greig days, I'm now wondering whether I'm now living through an even worse period right now. As a comparison, how does the 2009 team look against the side of 1982 - a year when we also had to look back four years for our last championship party?

Goalkeepers

1982 - Jim Stewart, Peter McCloy
2009 - Allan McGregor, Neil Alexander

Verdict: Much stronger now, Jim Stewart might be a decent goalkeeping coach, but he was a less than average Rangers goalkeeper. McCloy was way past his best, but still played quite often. Either current keeper would easily have been top pick in 1982.

Defenders

1982 - Sandy Jardine, Ally Dawson, Colin Jackson, Gregor Stevens, John McClelland, Tom Forsyth, Alex Miller
2009 - Kirk Broadfoot, Sasa Papac, Steven Whittaker, Davie Weir, Majid Bougherra, Christian Dailly, Lee McCulloch

Verdict: Scarily similar! Players well past their best, a lack of pace, and a reliance on one good centre half (McClelland and Bougherra).

Midfield

1982 - Jim Bett, Bobby Russell, Ian Redford, Billy Davies
2009 - Barry Ferguson, Pedro Mendes, Kevin Thomson, Steven Davis, Maurice Edu

Verdict: More options in the current bigger squad, but nobody in the current team is remotely near to having the craft and guile of Russell, and I'd say Jim Bett was at least as good if not better than the current players.

Forwards

1982 - Davie Cooper, Derek Johnstone, Colin McAdam, Gordon Dalziel, Willie Johnston, John McDonald
2009 - Kris Boyd, Kenny Miller, Nacho Novo, Kyle Lafferty, Steven Naismith, DaMarcus Beasley

Verdict: Despite DJ being way past his peak, he still was a far batter centre forward than Boyd. Obviously nobody in 2009 should even be mentioned in the same sentence as Cooper, and when you throw in the goalscoring ability of John McDonald, I'd say that the 1982 side had at least as good a set of forwards as the present team.

Youngsters

1982 - Billy McKay, Kenny Black, Kenny Lyall
2009 - John Fleck, Aaron

Verdict: None of the 1982 crop made it, hopefully Fleck will.

Opposition

1982 - Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen, Jim McLean's Dundee United, as well as Celtic, who won the league with players like Nicholas, Provan, McLeod and Burns.
2009 - 2 horse race against a Celtic team whose best players this season have been Scott Brown and Gary Caldwell.

Verdict: 1982 was miles tougher. Rangers finished the season 3rd, well behind the top 2 of Celtic and Aberdeen. The League Cup was won and we lost in the Scottish Cup final to Aberdeen.

Which of these Rangers sides would come out top? Always impossible to say for sure, and maybe I'm looking back more fondly than I should, but I have my doubts whether the current team would be able to beat a Rangers team looked on as one of the worst ever.

Is this what we have become….. Simply The Worst?
