The Sheik casts his eye

Saturday sees the traditional last day of the flat season at Doncaster with the running of the Doncaster Stakes at 3.15. It is typical end of year fare with a large field and any possible amount of likely winners. My two against the field are recent course winner Wunderwood and my idea of the winner Capitano Corelli who needs a little cut in the ground to be seen at his best.

The 3.45 sees Bahamian Pirate with a good chance. He hasn’t won for ages and needs soft ground but he is the best horse in the race and I’m hopeful he will win. If he doesn’t the likeliest beneficiary could be Ashdown Express who is very genuine and consistent.

Two other horses to be interested in are Misternando in the 1.30 going for his 11th win of the season and Gamut in the 2.35 who should have too much pace for Nysaean, Tholjanah and Scotts View.

At Chepstow PUNTAL should continue his excellent start to a chasing career by seeing off Santanay, Brother Joe and Le Duc. He won well at Cheltenham and looks to have a bright future.

The big race at Wincanton is at 1.45 and is very competitive indeed. I’m hoping the rapidly improving SWANSEA BAY has too much speed for Chicuelo, Horus, Gunther McBride, Un Jour a Vassy and Young Spartacus.

Finally the best race of the day is at Down Royal where last year’s Gold Cup second Truckers Tavern takes on Harbour Pilot and my idea of the likely winner BEEF OR SALMON, last year’s exceptional Irish novice who sadly fell in the Gold Cup. If they all stand their ground it should be a cracker.
