NOTIONS ON THE NATIONAL

Last updated : 04 April 2003 By The Mystic

The 2003 Running of The Grand National takes place this weekend at Aintree. The race doesnt capture the imagination of the public the way it once did, but it is still the most popular race in the calendar, and the one most bets are taken on. It's said to be easier to back winners these days, and that the race is more predictable. Yeah right. My wallet is testimony that the race is as hard to call as ever.

Follow your fancy, follow your own guides. Between now and Saturday afternoon you'll get predictions from everyone from footballers, popstars, politicians or the lady next door!!!!

40 go to post, and my first fancy is for IRIS BLEU, for no other reason than champion jockey, Tony McCoy has opted for it. he could have ridden any of half a dozen, but has chosen to sit on Martin Pipes top rated runner. He is around the 12/1 mark.

There is a strong fance for the Irish horses this year, the best of which is Ad Hoc. He can be backed at 8/1, not a particularly big price, but considering Kingsmark is not running, might just be worth a wee punt.

At the National I always like to back an outsider each-way, it can prove profitable, and this year my each way tip is Fadalko. Around the 80/1 price, it woudl pay 20/1 if a first four finish was achieved.

Good luck, i'll be listening for the result at half-time from Ibrox.
