Just When You Thought Everything Was Hunky-dory...

Having made an amazing start to the Champions League campaign and well and truly sorted out the Beggars when they came calling recently, everything was looking so good for the Teddy Bears, only for it all to rebound on us at Tannadice last Sunday. And subsequent revelations about plans to expand the G14 group of clubs with no place for Rangers had me wondering if we'll ever do anything right.

At a time when our efforts in Europe have lifted the club's reputation as high as it has been for some considerable time, it defies belief that expansion of the G14 organization would not be of interest to our club. In their defence - and it is no defence at all! - I can only assume that Murray and Bain were unaware of such plans and have been taken by surprise.

Meanwhile, Ra Sellick and quite a few other 'lesser' clubs will be in there, giving it their best sales pitch to win a seat at football's top table. Believe me, if this passes with no response from inside Ibrox, there can be no hiding place for the Minted One and his lackey. Lets hope it doesn't come to that.

Meanwhile, events on the park have been hard to get a handle on. An impressive run of early wins didn't do the confidence any harm at all but, like many Bears, I could see that the fixture list had been kind to us and subsequent defeats from Hearts and Hibs certainly kept my feet on the ground.

But as one of the many has never been too impressed by Ra Sellick, it was great to see them comprehensively put in their place and I really thought we were just about to set off on a run which would see us quickly disappear over the horizon. Oh dear, see what thought done.

Like Walter said, we didn't play particularly bad at Tannadice, we had a perfectly good goal disallowed, but we didn't play particularly good either. If we are to make and maintain a challenge for the title, we have to do better, lots better, and I like what the manager said about the days of chopping and changing the side being over.

The team has lacked consistency, of that there can be no doubt, but there has also been a distinct absence of any consistency of selection. Whatever his reasons for dropping the three goalscorers from Lyon, they backfired on Walter big-time against Hibs. And the choice of Amdy Faye, in games the manager knew would be difficult, puzzled me.

There is still a helluva lot of football to be played but I'd like to think Walter now has a fairly good idea of what his first pick eleven should be and is ready to go with that team for the bulk of the games ahead. The dangers of constantly reshuffling the pack are already evident and I'm sure the current boss has a very definite idea of what he wants from his players.

Lets hope we all get to see it, instead of wondering if and when it will all come right. And it would certainly make me feel a lot better if a message has already been to the G14 asking about our invite to the party.
