Rangers cruised to a convincing 4-0 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park this afternoon thanks to a second-half goal-spree to narrow the gap in the title race to two points.

Manager Walter Smith fielded an unchanged line-up from Tuesday - the only surprise perhaps being the continued inclusion of goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

The flags flew at half-mast and a one-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday was impeccably observed as it has been everywhere across Britain for the past ninety years - with just the one exception, namely Parkhead yesterday where the shameful scenes blackened the sacrifice made by the dead of two world wars and underlined that Celtic Football Club and their fans are not fit for decent society.

Rangers should have opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute - Kevin Thomson's free-kick, head-flicked on by Kris Boyd, somehow being nodded wide by Madjid Bougherra.

If that was an opportunity missed, Boyd would see his penalty-kick turned over by home goalkeeper Alan Combe after the striker had been barged from behind by Jamie Fowler in 28 minutes.

The home fans were irate at that decision - but it appeared a stonewall spot-kick.

Four minutes later Boyd's thirty-yard free-kick struck the crossbar, then as the Ibrox men piled on the pressure Nacho Novo's hook shot from a Pedro Mendes flick came back off an upright in 35 minutes.

The breaks were certainly not going the way of the visitors - underlined six minutes later when Boyd rounded Combe and was about to stroke the ball home only to have his legs whipped away from under him. It was another certain penalty - and surely a red card for the goalkeeper - but Referee Eddie Smith waved play on.

Kyle Lafferty replaced Novo at the interval, and it took Rangers just four minutes to break the deadlock after the restart when David Weir headed home a Thomson corner at the back post.

Boyd atoned for his penalty miss in 53 minutes when he rammed home a low left-foot drive from the edge of the box following a quite superb cross-field pass from Kenny Miller.

The game was as good as won - and nine minutes later Barry Ferguson substituted for Pedro Mendes.

Rangers were coasting - although Boyd did test Combe with a 25-yard grounder in 78 minutes that the goalkeeper held.

There was a serious injury concern for the Light Blues five minutes later when Thomson was stretchered off with a knee injury, to be replaced by Steven Whittaker.

Miller made it 3-0 in 86 minutes with a header from a Steve Davis corner - then three minutes later it was four when Whittaker volleyed home a Kirk Broadfoot cross.

It might even have been a nap hand - deep into injury time Miller was through on a Whittaker pass only for Combe to block his effort.

Afterwards a contented Walter Smith summarised:

"I was pleased to win. We didn't start all that well, but the first twenty minutes of the second-half were our best spell of the game. We created numerous chances in the first-half without playing well."
