Drab draw at Ibrox

Last updated : 23 July 2005 By Southside Johnny
Rangers returned to Ibrox this afternoon for the
latest game in their pre-season preparations - but
there was little entertainment on show for the 30,264
spectators, a dire game ending goalless.

A healthy travelling support followed old friends
Borussia Monchengladbach to Glasgow - and for the home
fans there was perhaps disappointment in that only one
new player, Jose Pierre Fanfan started the game,
although Ian Murray and Federico Nieto were listed as
substitutes.

The game was lifeless from the opening whistle, with
both teams clearly recognising that this was a
friendly, although Nacho Novo did test Borussia
goalkeeper Michael Melka with a 25-yard shot in twenty
minutes.

Seven minutes later a mazy run from Thomas Buffel
ended when Melka held his shot from the edge of the
box.

The action quickly switched to the other end - Wesley
Sonck releasing Vaclav Sverkos through on goal only
for the Czech's effort to come back off an upright.

The visitors were suddenly finding holes in the Ibrox
defence - on the half-hour Sonck headed wide from a
Sverkos free-kick, then two minutes later the Belgian
striker shot wide following a mistake by Zurab
Khizanishvili.

Both Murray and Nieto were introduced for the start of
the second-half along with Alex Rae, but it took the
arrival of youngster Charlie Adam in 62 minutes to
liven things up - his twenty-yard shot three minutes
later being held by substitute goalkeeper Darius
Kampa.

Monchengladbach were dangerous on the break - Marek
Heinz breaking through the Ibrox defence in 68 minutes
only to be thwarted by Ronald Waterreus, the rebound
falling to Peer Kluge whose effort was blocked by
Khizanishvili.

Ten minutes later Nieto almost marked his Ibrox debut
with a goal when his header from an Adam cross was
clawed out by Kampa, then immediately thereafter Alex
Rae's 25-yard piledriver from a Murray pass flashed
just wide.

Adam continued to impress - a thundering 25-yard drive
being held by Kampa in 84 minutes, then two minutes
later his forty-yard lob only just cleared the
crossbar.

The game ended goalless, and afterwards Manager Alex
McLeish summarised:

"Our shape was better in the second-half. Ross
McCormack and Charlie Adam showed great intelligence.
At the moment I'm simply waiting for people to get
fit."

On Sotirios Kyrgiakos he stated:

"I spoke to the player - it was purely and simply a
financial decision on his part."
