Brizy's Derby Pick

Last updated : 04 June 2004 By Sir Brizy

So, what am I looking for in the winner¹s profile? First and foremost, a horse with a staying pedigree, but also with a blend of killer speed to make it to the home straight with a chance to win.

Of the top three in the market, namely Yeats, snow Ridge and North Light. With Snow Ridge there is stamina on the Dams side but for me his profile is more that of his Sire, Indian Ridge, a true sprinter, for me he wont stay. He wasn't closing in his runner up performance in the 2000 Guineas; Dettori may be jumping up and down about him, but whats new!

Yeats is the one seemingly who prefers easy ground, he wont get this but he could produce another gear on fast going, however his stable and jockey aren't the best at the minute and at the odds, I will give him a bodyswerve.

The last leading contender is North Light, he has lightning speed from his Sire, but it is his Dam who gives him the stamina and he looks like a middle distance horse on his times and profile. A horse of similar pedigree to North Light happened to be a certain Doctor Devious, so I am hoping for a winning derby run.

For the others American Post looks both fragile in truly fast ground, he wont win. Salford City has a pedigree that shouldn¹t be capable of winning a Derby, the two supplemented horses, Gatwick and Hazyview, look out of their depth, as does Pukka.

For an outsider I will pick Let the Lion Roar, by Sadlers Wells who has a great record of Derby winners and in first time blinkers he may be galvanized into a solid effort and run into a place.

Brizy's Bets: -

North Light to Win @ 7/2

Let the Lion Roar E/W @ 14/1
