AS I PLEASE - What did you do in the referendum, daddy?

The internet is wonderful but it can be a world of its own. Great arguments that go on for hours and days. Lots of information. Great graphics. But how much of it makes the way into the real world?

The internet has been ghettoised - there are relatively few forums where fans of different clubs can have a decent chat these days. Computers are idiot-proof - and so the internet has become infected by idiots who imagine that shouting down the opposition, issuing threats or delivering the same half dozen one-liners, is ‘debating.’

An antidote to this is real life politics on the knocker. If you want to make a difference you have to get out into the real world and try and:

A/ Drag out the voters who support your views

B/  Make converts through rational discussion

C/  Demoralise the opposition by putting up more posters and delivering more leaflets!

The referendum on the Thursday 18 September 2014 is the vote of a lifetime.

Sitting on your hands because Jim Murphy’s rant about the Orange Order offended you is missing the point. The point is to save the Union.  We won’t get another chance in our lifetimes. You can think of a thousands excuses for not voting or not getting active - but that is all they are - excuses.

It’s a big boys game - the big issue is saving the Union. I would prefer more Union Jacks but the high heid yins have made the decisions on the general thrust and tone of the debate - they are fighting the air war - punters like us have to fight the ground war.

Elections are wonderful - they clarify things. You either do or you die.

The election date doesn’t change. Any excuses you have should be consigned to the dustbin. You won’t get another chance.

I signed up months ago and got a few parcels of leaflets to hand out locally. A mate got me back out knocking doors as part of an organised group. Campaigns need bodies on the ground. We can all play our part - even if you haven’t done any campaigning before you all be found a task. If you are too shy to canvass you can deliver leaflets or put up posters.

Rather than bleating about politicians - get out and participate yourself.   Join the campaign, join the party of your choice and play an active part.

I’m proudly Scottish and proudly British. The future of our country is in our own hands - I want to win the referendum so we'll we put talk of separation to bed for a generation.

All my adult life I’ve campaigned, wrote letters, stood in elections, delivered speeches, engaged in debate - nothing is more important that this final month.

The songs we sing and the flags we wave at Ibrox are merely outward displays of the history, culture and politics which has moulded our country.  Be true to those traditions and get involved with the mainstream of Scottish politics and take an active part in the campaign in the coming weeks

Don’t delay, don’t fool yourself with excuses - contact Better Together and get active - sign up and the play your part  http://bettertogether.net
